On the day of the Navy-Army annual matchup, another major event occurs on the college football bowl calendar. On Saturday, South Carolina State and Jackson State will face each other in the Celebration Bowl at the Mercedez-Benz Stadium.

Since T.C. Taylor became head coach in December 2022 after Deion Sanders left Colorado, the Tigers have had an outstanding 2024 campaign. With their lone defeat against an FBS opponent (Louisiana-Monroe), Jackson State has an 11-2 record. As the season ended, the Tigers, led by FCS running back Irv Mulligan, averaged 39.7 points per game.

The Bulldogs, with one FBS loss, enter with a 9-2 record, like Jackson State. Chennis Berry, first-year head coach at South Carolina State, rebounded from a 1-2 start with an eight-game winning streak. Also, it included six victories by 20 points or more. In addition, 12 of the 27 players named to the first team all-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference were Bulldogs.

What is the Celebration Bowl

The Celebration Bowl is an annual football game that pits the champions of two FCS conferences. In addition, they are composed of HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities): the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

South Carolina State won the Mountain East Athletic Conference this year, and Jackson State is representing the SWAC. The game honors HBCUs’ history and heritage and is seen as Black college football’s unofficial national championship.

The former pitted Florida A&M against another top HBCU team at season’s end, and the victor was often considered the Black national champion. With its move to the start of the season, the Orange Blossom Classic made a triumphant return in 2021.

Neither the SWAC nor the MEAC can send its champion to the FCS playoffs, which generally start in late November because the Celebration Bowl is traditionally held in mid-December.

The Celebration Bowl competitors may not get the chance to compete for a national title, but they do get to participate in one of the most prestigious games in their sport. The Celebration Bowl has been a massive success in recent years, with audiences of over 40,000 fans in each of the last three games. Last year, Florida A&M defeated Howard with an announced attendance of 41,108.
