Vikings Signed Matt Corral to Replace Injured McCarthy

On Friday, the Minnesota Vikings signed Matt Corral after placing rookie QB JJ McCarthy on the injury list. The latter suffered knee injuries during the team’s preseason game against the Raiders. Thus, he will be unavailable for the regular season.

While Corral’s performance in the United Football League was lackluster, he did win all three of his starts and contribute as a reliever in Birmingham’s victory over Michigan. Along with Corral, the Vikings now have three quarterbacks: Nick Mullens, Sam Darnold (who will start), and Jaren Hall. Corral is probably vying for the position of third-string quarterback on the squad.

Future of JJ McCarthy

The initial stage is obtaining clearance to enter rehabilitation. During his news conference on Wednesday afternoon, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell stated that when quarterback Ryan McCarthy is discharged from the hospital following surgery, he would be expected to return to the team facility to start his rehabilitation program. Even though McCarthy cannot participate in physical drills, O’Connell has said that he wants him to attend several quarterback meetings this season as part of his development plan to keep studying the system and subtleties of being an NFL quarterback.

After that, in the 2025 season, McCarthy will start preparing to take the next step toward becoming the future franchise quarterback. The injury affects multiple layers of McCarthy’s development plan. If McCarthy wants to get back on track next season, he needs to focus on his health and get his knee healed correctly. However, McCarthy is at more risk than just a successful first season.

O’Connell’s most important task throughout the winter and preseason was for McCarthy to provide live-action practice sessions. To help the rookie quarterback adjust to the offense, he insisted that McCarthy get plenty of live snaps during training camp and the preseason. Now that McCarthy is out for the season, he won’t get any live repetitions until next summer, which may slow down his development.
