Maryland Sports Betting Committee to Award Licenses on a Case-by-Case Basis

The Maryland sports betting committee will review applications on a case-by-case basis. Also, they are aiming for a late 2022 launch. The Sports Wagering Application Review Commission will increase the frequency of its meetings to complete the process faster.

Applicants for sports betting licenses have until October 21 to submit their documents to state officials. Maryland will award a total of 90 licenses, where 30 will be for facilities and 60 for mobile sports wagering.

SWARC decided to review applications on a case-by-case basis. That way, the process will continue to move. COO Jim Nielsen of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency recommended the move so that the state can launch mobile sports betting before the year ends.

According to bookie software reports, applicants will be subject to a series of background checks no matter what kind of application is being sought. However, Nielsen believes that mobile operators have a better chance of scaling quickly.

A universal award date has a lot of inherent risks. However, Nielsen claims that the staggered strategy is also advantageous due to its adaptability to the caps. For instance, even if fewer than sixty applications for mobile sports betting are submitted by the October 21 deadline, they may still be accepted and evaluated as received.

After voters in Maryland approve the move in November 2020, the General Assembly will formalize the process with a bill in the spring of the following year. According to bookie pay per head sources, the SWARC, which collaborates with Nielsen’s agency, was mandated by the legislation.
