Gauthier Scores 1st NHL Goal to Help Ducks Win Against the Red Wings
The Anaheim Ducks won against the Red Wings with the help of rookie Cutter Gauthier’s 1st NHL goal. The victors rallied from a two-goal deficit to achieve the come-from-behind win Friday night.
The Ducks’ first comeback victory after falling by numerous goals was also their best offensive performance of the season. Last season, they set a record for the most come-from-behind victories in NHL history, with six in the first fifteen games.
The goal was set by Boston College alumni Drew Helleson and Brian Dumoulin. It was a fairy tale for Gauthier, who spent his childhood in Michigan playing for Honey Baked Hockey. Two goals in a 38-second burst by the hosts at the 11:09 and 11:47 minutes of the third quarter gave them control. Johnston scored his first and game-winning goals by deftly tipping in a shot from Jansen Harkins, capping off a surge.
Following a flawless blue line-to-blue line feed from Helleson, Gauthier scored his first goal of the season with a shot that he blasted wide.
Come From Behind Win
It was 3-3 with less than four minutes of the third period played when the Ducks tied the game on the power play and the score at three goals apiece. Zellweger sent the ball to Terry on top of the left faceoff circle. Terry got the puck in a shooting position but gave the impression he was selling a pass by shifting his gaze. Terry then scored his sixth goal of the season, punishing Lyon for hesitating.
The Ducks were within striking distance and almost scored on a power play with 2:16 remaining in the second period before drawing another penalty 28 seconds later. They were now down one goal. Reborn, thanks to Zegras’s man-advantage goal, made possible by Zellweger’s genius, they are living their best lives. He skated the puck from beyond his net to the offensive blue line, set up a pass and receive with Alex Killorn, and then found the lagging Zegras, who snapped the puck past Lyon with a net-driven shot. It was Zegras’s second goal of the season; on October 12, he scored an empty-net goal in the season opener.
Around sixty-five seconds into the middle period, Detroit had a chance to take the lead on a transition sequence that Raymond keyed and executed. In the defensive zone, he detached the puck from Pavel Mintykuov’s stick, which DeBrincat retrieved. Soon after receiving the ball off the right wing wall, Raymond was set up for a short-side shot from the right dot. The puck clung to the handle of Gibson’s stick like a spatula, preventing him from scoring a second goal so nearly.
Despite the Ducks scoring first, Detroit went into halftime leading 2-1, thanks to two goals scored on power plays.
