Florida Sports Betting Fight Heads to the US Supreme Court

The Florida sports betting fight is vital for the future of online gambling in the US. Two pari-mutuel firms appealed to the US Supreme Court to block the Seminole Tribe’s sports wagering monopoly in Florida.

Last Monday, the firms asked the Supreme Court to reconsider an appellate court’s ruling that upheld the arrangement. According to bookie pay per head reports, the deal is now under legal appeal in Florida. Experts estimate that the state can generate a minimum of $2.5 billion in revenue over the next five years.

Two attorneys submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of West Flagler Associates and Bonita-Fort Myers Corp. less than a month after the Seminoles launched mobile sports betting in November. The tribe paid $58 million to the state as an initial revenue-sharing installment.

Florida Sports Betting Fight

The federal case revolves around the agreement in 2021 that gave the Seminoles control over sports betting in Florida. The tribe is solely responsible for all bets placed via mobile app or other technology as per the agreement. That is the only way how to be a bookie in Florida.

According to sportsbook pay per head reviews and news sites, the contract, officially called a compact, was authorized to go into force by Deb Haaland, the U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary. Her office is responsible for overseeing tribal gaming. In 2021, a federal district judge sided with the tribe. However, the US Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia overturned the decision in June. Thus, the corporations appealed to the Supreme Court after the full appeal court declined to reevaluate the panel’s ruling.

The Florida Supreme Court case questions the “hub-and-spoke” sports-betting relationship between the Seminoles and firms. Also, they claimed it may violate a state constitutional amendment that requires voter approval of gambling expansions.
